If you experience sudden and often severe dizziness when moving your head, you may be suffering from ear stones (BBVP).
This can be diagnosed and treated in a short course of treatment, often in a single consultation.
What does it cost you?
You can be examined by one of our Physiotherapists by booking an examination here on the page. The price depends on whether you are referred by a doctor, a member of Health Insurance Denmark or have health insurance. You are of course always welcome to book an appointment without being referred by a doctor.

Vestibulær træning omfatter en række aktive øvelser, der har til formål at:
Reducere svimmelhed og følelse af ubalance
Forbedre evnen til at stabilisere synet under bevægelse
Bedre balancen og forebygge fald
Cause
There can be many causes of ear stones and dizziness. The symptoms are often very unpleasant, but the symptoms are easy to treat.
Facts
- Symptoms begin acutely, often in the morning or at night
- Dizziness
- Short-term attack of rotational (approx. 80%) vertigo accompanied by nystagmus that is triggered by specific head movements
- For example, seconds after the patient has turned in bed or sat up
- Accumulation of seizures
- The patient experiences a period of hyperacute (paroxysmal), short-term (10-30 seconds) attacks that are often accompanied by nausea
- 25% have multiple attacks weekly and 50% are bothered by multiple attacks daily
- Positional seizures
- The seizures are only triggered by certain head movements, most often by the patient tilting their head back or turning over in bed.
- This is related to the fact that the disease in most cases is caused by affection of the posterior arch.
- Fatigue
- Upon recurrence, the symptoms weaken or disappear completely (fatigue) and can only be triggered again after a refractory period of up to half an hour.
- It’s not hearing loss.
- Some people may also have a more general feeling of vertigo and instability when walking upright.
- Some patients report completely uncharacteristic dizziness symptoms, and the diagnosis is only made through clinical examination.

Oftest stillede spørgsmål om øresten og svimmelhed
Hvad er øresten?
Ear stones (benign paroxysmal positional vertigo – BPPV) occur when small crystals in the inner ear break loose and move into the auditory canals. This disrupts the balance system and causes brief attacks of dizziness – often when changing head position.
Hvilke symptomer giver øresten?
Typical symptoms include sudden dizziness upon movement, especially when lying down, turning in bed, or getting up quickly. Some also experience nausea, discomfort, nystagmus (involuntary eye movements) and, rarely, vomiting.
Hvordan føles øresten?
The dizziness feels like the room is spinning for a few seconds. It can be severe, but usually passes quickly as soon as the head is held still. Many describe it as short-term attacks that recur with certain movements.
Hvordan behandler man øresten?
Treatment typically consists of manual exercises that move the crystals back to their original position in the inner ear. Physical therapists use techniques such as the Epley or Semont maneuvers, and in some cases vestibular training to stabilize balance.
Hvorfor får man øresten?
The cause is often unknown, but the condition is more common in people over 50, after head trauma, infections, or prolonged periods of inactivity. It is a harmless but uncomfortable condition that can be treated effectively.
Hvad skal jeg gøre, hvis jeg får pludselig svimmelhed og kvalme?
Sit or lie down to avoid falling, and avoid rapid head movements. If the dizziness is severe, persists for several days, or you also have hearing loss or vision problems, you should contact a doctor.
Hvor ofte skal man lave øvelser mod øresten?
Exercises are typically performed daily or as needed until symptoms resolve. Most people experience significant improvement after 1–3 treatments, but repetitions may be necessary if dizziness returns.
Kan fysioterapi hjælpe ved øresten og svimmelhed?
Yes – physiotherapists who work with vestibular rehabilitation can perform specific maneuvers, instruct in ear stone exercises, and offer vestibular training to restore balance and prevent relapse.
